Age 7 and here's why:
We have found that a quick screening at age 7 will enable us to recognize any emerging growth and development problems. Many children have no room for their adult teeth because their jaws are too narrow. This frequently occurs in children with histories of poor nasal respiration, chronic ear infections, mouth breathing, etc. By using a slow, gentle expander, we can help develop a normal size jaw and create room for developing adult teeth. We are then able to greatly reduce the need for extracting healthy adult teeth. We have found from experience that when we do not extract healthy adult teeth, we can create a broader, healthier, more attractive smile.
Many children have additional jaw growth issues that can effect their smiles. By the age of 7, the permanent back teeth have already begun establishing the adult bite. We can see front and back as well as side to side relationships. One jaw may be growing faster or slower than the other. An upper or lower jaw growing too much or not enough can be recognized at an early age. If uncorrected this will result in an excessive overbite, underbite or open bite. We can improve facial balance, and avoid jaw corrective surgery as an adult, by influencing growth during these critical years.
What is the advantage of early care?
Timely screenings enhance the chances for an incredible smile. Simple appliances are used to gently guide growth and development and prevent more serious problems. Reducing time in braces and enhancing self-esteem are additional benefits of early care.
What if the Orthodontist does not feel early treatment is needed?
If no treatment is needed, Dr. Amram or Dr. Klempner will see your child every three to six months to monitor his or her jaw growth and tooth development. These screenings are provided at no cost to you or your insurance company.
Regardless of whether your child needs early treatment or not, a timely screening will give you peace of mind.
